At the NMI, we’re all about exploring new and emerging technologies, no matter the absurdity. As non-fungible tokens have been rapidly gaining in popularity, we found it fitting to present certificates to Capstone students as NFTs at SLAM!
In addition to their old school paper New Media Certificate, students had the option to acquire an NFT version as well. NFTs are environmentally friendly digital assets that contain value and authenticated ownership. By including them as a feature at SLAM, students learned about NFTs in a personal and hands-on way.
Certificate student Brian Hall became the first student to accept a UGA certificate as an NFT. While we’re pleased to be the first to present NFTs on campus, we certainly won’t be the last.
“In the future, one could imagine NFTs as part of the college credentialing experience,” said John Weatherford, New Media Capstone Instructor. “Instead of having just a paper certificate, the students have a unique, verifiable digital credential to share with employers.”
