The NMI

The New Media Institute (NMI) is an interdisciplinary academic unit dedicated to exploring the critical, commercial, and creative dimensions of emerging technologies. The NMI is committed to the teaching and training of new and emerging media professionals and to providing students with technical skills and knowledge. Curriculum focuses on critical investigations into the constantly changing technology and media landscape and the development of skills to design and build interactive digital products. As a key partner of the Innovation District, the New Media Institute connects our students with industry and university needs to provide interactive digital solutions to real-world problems and organizational objectives.

The New Media Certificate

The NMI houses the University of Georgia’s largest certificate program. The New Media Certificate (NMC) supplements any undergraduate or graduate degree and is a credential that demonstrates a student is technowledgeable: the understanding of new media technologies and their application in a chosen field. Certificate students have access to hands-on classroom environments, innovative technologies, and networking opportunities that lead to J-O-B-S.

Emerging Media Masters

The Emerging Media Masters (EM) focuses on the intersection of technology and design, allowing individuals to explore the various facets, roles, and applications of emerging media across an array of disciplines and careers. Designed to accommodate students and professionals from a variety of backgrounds and industries, this program is intended for individuals who wish to further personal career goals and those of their employers through the leveraging of emerging media and innovative technologies.

NMIXpo

NMIXpo is the NMI’s end-of-semester multi-day celebration that brings together students, alumni, faculty, and industry professionals for an unforgettable experience. This dynamic event features a variety of engaging sub-events, including student showcases like SLAM and Emerge, where innovative projects in technology and design are unveiled by New Media Certificate and Emerging Media Masters students. Beyond the showcases, NMIXpo fosters connection and camaraderie through award dinners, reunions, networking opportunities, and more, offering a one-of-a-kind experience for everyone.

TEDxUGA

Every year, a carefully selected group of UGA faculty, staff, alumni, and students gather together at TEDxUGA to share their ideas worth spreading. These ideas inspire curiosity attracting audience members from all over to connect and share in this collective experience. Every year this connectivity fosters an atmosphere of creativity and inspiration that can only be truly experienced first hand. With the help of campus and community partners, this annual event brings together UGA’s leading thinkers and doers to share their passions, stories, inspirations, and ideas.
