John Weatherford is well-known for his techspertise around the NMI, but recently he’s had a few opportunities to collaborate and innovate elsewhere on campus.
First up, John joined forces with other UGA faculty to compete for a national new media spotlight. Comprised of Grady College Dean Charles Davis, the Institute of Artificial Intelligence‘s Ping Ma, and Mr. Weatherford himself, the trio submitted a proposal to the National Association of Broadcasters’ PILOT Innovation Challenge. The all-star team was named as a finalist for their proposal, which outlined ways to use artificial intelligence for audience insight and content strategy. With this feat on the books and experience under our belts, the NMI squad is already on the lookout for more innovative opportunities on the horizon.
Then, John switched gears from competitor to critic as he judged UGA’s first-ever Quick Pitch Competition hosted by the Innovation District. With only 90 seconds each, ten teams pitched their business ideas ranging from lifestyle beauty brands to veterinary products as they vied for a $1,000 prize and a chance to pitch to potential investors. As the Innovation District continues to grow, we look forward to more opportunities to connect and create with our campus partners. Maybe next year an NMI student will take on the challenge!
