Year of the Slut podcast empowers listeners to rethink their approach to feminism. The title Year of the Slut is intentionally inflammatory. When we read (or hear) the word ‘slut,’ we all form an opinion — whether positive or negative. But what if sluts and feminists are one in the same? Think on it; both are self-liberated from what society tells them they can be. “Slut,” when redefined, provides access to freedom. Congratulations! You’re now free be a slut in whatever context you choose (or not — that’s your choice)! “Feminism,” when redefined, gives access to power and connection. Wow! Congrats again! You’re connecting with other feminists and taking back power from the sexist systems in place. In the world of Year of the Slut, the two terms are synonymous and they are shameless. Hosts Cydney White and Kelly Elson redefine and reclaim these words, among many others, to empower listeners in feminist thought and discussion.

Year of the Slut podcast fills the gap between education and entertainment in the feminist podcasting market. YotS discusses theoretical approaches to feminism on a grounded level and provides ways to integrate these practices in real-life. Cydney and Kelly entertain and encourage listeners to progress their personal feminist journey. And, of course, progress in the collective dismantling of the patriarchy (which, according to bell hooks, is another way to say institutionalized sexism). Seasoned feminists and fresh feminists alike will pick up a new perspective while listening along.

As feminists, we are all still learning, so wouldn’t it be better to have fun while learning? To laugh not at, but rather, in spite of our oppressions? Cydney and Kelly believe in punching up rather than punching down. YotS punches up at the tools of oppression and follows in the footsteps of the National Association of Colored Women by using their official motto, “Lifting as We Climb,” in order to create an accessible space for feminist learning.
