Proximize

proximize_bloglogo-288x212Wouldn’t it be cool if you had an app that could maximize your time and prioritize your day efficiently and effectively? If you want to make the most out of your studying in college, you gotta have some fuel. But sometimes, it’s hard to put the books down even when your stomachs growling. You don’t want to potentially risk wasting any study time because the lines at the dining halls are just too long. Proximize can help with that. Our app can tell you the capacities of certain facilities around campus, specifically the dining halls, by using The Internet of Things (IoT)

By definition, “The Internet of Things is the network of physical objects accessed through the Internet, as defined by technology analysts and visionaries. These objects contain embedded technology to interact with internal states or the external environment.” However, our biggest challenge was finding a need that would be best fulfilled using IoT technology.

As a result, we decided to focus on college students to see what their primary obstacle is while in school, and how we could fix it using IoT. It came to no surprise that college students struggle the most with time management and making the most out of their day. We feel as though we can’t do it all: have a social life, make good grades, and get enough sleep. Why do we feel this way? Because we’re wasting time where time doesn’t need to be wasted.

By using sensors as our specific IoT technology, Proximize has collected the data capacities of each of the Dining Halls to deliver a user-friendly experience for UGA students, faculty, or anyone who’s interested in grabbing a bite at one of the five scrumptious facilities. We give you real-time data that shows you not just the percentage of how full each dining hall is at that very moment, but we also give those percentage numbers meaning.  Bolton shows “95%”, so Proximize will tell you something like, “too busy…stick to the books and stop by later if you’re stomach can handle it.”

In the future, our goal is to use this application and implement sensors in other facilities, such as the Main Library, Student Learning Center, and even Ramsey. We don’t want UGA students to waste any time; our motto is “your time, your way.”
