In September, the NMI roadtripped to Orlando for a look behind the curtain with the creative teams at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios who shape the parks’ magical experiences that thrill visitors from around the world.
We kicked off the trip with Disney Imagineering where we met with members of the design team behind immersive rides like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, which we of course had to experience first-hand. Then we enjoyed a panel with Disney Imagineers featuring UGA alumna Deb Van Horn, before heading to Disney Springs for networking, dinner, and bowling with NMI alumni.
The next day, we visited Universal Orlando where UGA Grady alumnus Eric Baker, Senior Creative Director for Universal’s Harry Potter worlds, gave us a behind-the-scenes look at Diagon Alley and shared his approach to designing immersive spaces. We also met with a panel of Universal Creative team members who provided insights into their career journeys, roles at Universal, and advice for students who want to pursue careers in design, immersive experience, or guest experience.

The trip wrapped up with free time to explore Orlando’s parks, including Epic Universe, Epcot, and Volcano Bay. From exclusive tours to alumni connections, the trip was an incredible opportunity to learn, network, and experience the creativity behind Orlando’s innovative attractions!
