Speak Freely
Speak Freely is a bold new initiative designed to help University of Georgia students cut through the confusion surrounding free speech and freedom of expression on campus. At its core, the project is a sleek, student-friendly digital platform that makes sense of complicated policies and brings them to life through an interactive map, engaging video, and an innovative custom GPT. The purpose is simple yet powerful: give students clarity on their rights and responsibilities while empowering them with the confidence to engage in civil discourse.
While students may know the First Amendment exists, many don’t understand how it applies to them on campus, what UGA’s policies actually say, or how to responsibly navigate difficult conversations. Without this knowledge, students can feel disengaged or misinformed, and the university is left vulnerable to conflict and misunderstanding. Speak Freely answers this challenge by blending policy with creativity. From an immersive infographic to a quick video explainer, the platform makes civic education not only accessible, but engaging. And with a custom GPT trained to focus only on free expression and civil discourse, students get instant, trustworthy answers to their most pressing questions.
The client for this project, UGA’s Division of Student Affairs, tasked the team with creating a resource that meets students where they are: on their laptops, in their social feeds, and looking for interactive ways to learn. The result is a dynamic product that harnesses emerging A.I. technology while staying grounded in the neutrality required for policy education. Students walk away knowing their rights, their responsibilities, and the tools they need to speak freely and respectfully anywhere. In just a few clicks, the platform transforms abstract policy into practical knowledge, leaving students with one key takeaway: free expression belongs to everyone, and it starts with understanding.
