LaserCube

What if light could enhance an audience member’s experience? Meet LaserCube: a compact, high-powered laser projector originally built for DJs and light shows, now reimagined by a team of creative New Media Institute (NMI) students to do so much more. Their mission? To transform this niche entertainment device into a dynamic storytelling tool for live events like NMIXpo and TEDxUGA. With its open API and LaserOS software, the LaserCube becomes a canvas for innovation, capable of projecting custom visuals, interactive graphics, and immersive experiences that captivate audiences in entirely new ways.

The problem? Traditional event visuals are static, predictable, and often disconnected from the energy of the moment. The NMI, needs a fresh, flexible way to elevate their event production. Something that’s visually striking, easy to deploy, and uniquely memorable. The solution? A curated library of event-ready assets and a streamlined system for using LaserCube on stage. Whether it’s animating a speaker’s message or adding some NMI flair to a student showcase, these students are building a toolkit that turns light into an experience.

From experimenting with LaserOS to developing custom visuals and understanding user experiences, this team is pushing boundaries and learning together. And as they build for the NMI, they’re laying the groundwork for future collaborations, with other on-campus organizations, programs, and even NMI clients like the Rock Lobsters. Want to see more?
