Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Create two separate WordPress installs on your server. Then, use a different theme on each install to create:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A commerce site<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A content site<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">? Rationale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Two big thoughts behind the design of this project:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>WordPress is an incredibly powerful and versatile tool! So, we wanted to give you an opportunity to get a sense of some of the different ways in which it can be used. A news site and an e-commerce site might seem pretty different at first blush (and they are!), but as you build the two together, we hope you&#8217;ll get an excellent sense of how the same tool\u2014WordPress\u2014is well-adapted for both.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As with many of the projects in this course, there&#8217;s immense value in doing something (in this case, creating a new WordPress install, finding a theme, customizing it, working with plugins, etc.) multiple times. The first time you do any new thing, you&#8217;re sort of just getting your bearings. The second (and any subsequent) time you do it, you&#8217;re reinforcing learning, optimizing workflows, and gaining new insights. Hopefully, this assignment\u2014combined with your WordPress playground\u2014will give you some of that invaluable practice.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">? Structure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each install should be done in a separate folder inside your <code>project-three<\/code> folder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><code>webdev\/project-three\/content<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>webdev\/project-three\/commerce<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Both of these installs must be separate from your WordPress playground install.<\/strong> When following the <a href=\"http:\/\/nmi.cool\/web\/wordpress-starter-steps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WordPress Starter Steps<\/a> for these two new installs, you&#8217;ll need to specify these in the directory field under location following the specified file path outlined above. <strong>Pay attention here<\/strong>: moving a WordPress site is totally possible, but a little bit of a pain. Better to do it right the first time! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll also update the <code>index.html<\/code> page at <code>yoursite.com\/webdev\/index.html<\/code> to contain your reflection for Project Three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">? Content<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, you can choose any topic you like for your sites. You&#8217;re welcome to dream up your own publication\/store, or knock off an existing one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For both sites, you&#8217;ll need to create enough content (articles or items for sale) to create a convincing home page, but that only 3-4 of those articles\/items for sale need to be fully complete. For example: aim for 6-8 items in your store and 8-10 news stories on your news site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>Note: Some themes come with demo content. You may use the demo content to help you get started working with a theme, but you may not use the theme's demo content as <strong>your<\/strong> content for this project.<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For your content site, it&#8217;s fine for most stories to contain only a headline, featured image, and intro paragraph\u2014the things that make a story look complete on the home page. But, pick 3-4 stories to flesh out more fully so that you can get a sense of all the ways you can use WordPress to shape a story\u2014different blocks, page templates, etc. Note: You do NOT have to write the content yourself; it&#8217;s fine if you borrow content from the web, but throw a little acknowledgement in there so your source is clear. I&#8217;m more concerned with how you are constructing the page than the content of your news stories! <a href=\"#footnote-1-90\" id=\"note-1-90\" rel=\"footnote\">1<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For your commerce site, it&#8217;s similarly fine for most items for sale to contain only a name, featured image, and a price. But, do pick a few items (say, 3-4) to fully flesh out\u2014perhaps include marketing copy, a video embed, customer testimonies, customizable varieties (sizes, etc.). Also, for your commerce site, it&#8217;s important to note that we expect you not to actually set up a functioning store. ?  <a href=\"#footnote-2-90\" id=\"note-2-90\" rel=\"footnote\">2<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">? Grading (10 points total)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2705 Required Elements (2 sites x 4.5 points\/each)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Content site<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each content site must include<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A home page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A page focused on a specific topic (a section\/feature\/etc.), using <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wpbeginner.com\/glossary\/category\/\" target=\"_blank\">categories<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Watch this <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=87&amp;v=0t5azK0MH7Y&amp;feature=emb_logo\" target=\"_blank\">short video<\/a> explaining how to display posts on a page<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple stories (roughly 8-10) <a href=\"#footnote-3-90\" id=\"note-3-90\" rel=\"footnote\">3<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3-4 story posts fully fleshed out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of a variety of blocks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><s>Customization of theme using additional CSS<\/s><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Commerce site<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each commerce site must include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A home page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A page listing multiple products (a collection\/section\/etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple products for sale (around 6-8)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3-4 of those products fully fleshed out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of a variety of blocks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><s>Customization of theme using additional CSS<\/s><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">? Qualitative Elements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, I&#8217;ll be assessing your projects qualitatively on the appropriateness of your chosen themes to each site&#8217;s purpose and your intelligent use of WordPress features (custom CSS, plugins, widgets, etc.). And as always, I&#8217;ll be assessing overall effort and care, as well as creativity and ambition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional qualitative elements for each site might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Content site<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The use of additional media types typically seen on real content sites such as videos, interactive infographics, and audio snippets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The use of tools that real media publications might include such as suggested \/ related story blocks, email newsletter sign-ups, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creative and appropriate use of plugins\/widgets\/custom CSS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Commerce site<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The use of additional media types typically seen on commerce sites (videos, GIFs, 3D views)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The creation of content typically found on e-commerce sites (product stories, sales, customer reviews, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creative and appropriate use of plugins\/widgets\/custom CSS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"reflection\">? Reflection (1 point)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As usual, your reflection should generally discuss:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New skills acquired<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Struggles faced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Things you&#8217;re proud of (specifically address how you integrated the qualitative elements of the assignment)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additional things you&#8217;d like to learn \/ work on in the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Write <strong>one<\/strong> reflection for <strong>both<\/strong> sites you create. Link to your reflection in your navigation on one of your sites (or both!). <strong>Be sure to include the names of any plugins that you incorporated and the names of the themes that you used<\/strong>. Remember, your reflection doesn&#8217;t have to be long, but it should be thoughtfully constructed, specific, and it should directly address how you moved beyond the required elements to create an exceptional website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Submission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to making sure that your sites can be found at the directory outlined under the Structure section your should make sure your projects are linked on both the project-three home page and your production homepage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, you will not need to upload the WordPress sites to your server&#8211; that automatically happens when you create the installation. However, you WILL need to upload the project-three homepage and re-upload the wevdev homepage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your instructor will evaluate your project by visiting those URLs, so to double-check that everything\u2019s in the right place, visit those URLs yourself, ideally in a separate browser or an incognito\/private window to ensure that you aren\u2019t falling victim to any&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/caching\/\">caching<\/a>&nbsp;issues. Check it once, and then check it again! If I can\u2019t access your work it will be considered late. <\/p>\n<div class=\"footnotes\"><hr \/><ol><li id=\"footnote-1-90\" class=\"footnote\"><p> Also, feel free to be creative with the type of content that your site features&#8230; yes, there are lots of important headlines right now, but if you want to make a content site dedicate to the latest in cat memes, that&#8217;s fine too!<a href=\"#note-1-90\" class=\"footnote-return\">&#8617;<\/a><\/p><\/li><!--\/#footnote-1.footnote--><li id=\"footnote-2-90\" class=\"footnote\"><p> Again, creativity is encouraged as you decide what to sell here!
