Students must also have applied to the New Media Institute. Class is offered by POD only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"description\"><b>Description<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Design, develop, and code interactive web products that function effectively across multiple platforms through an introduction to front-end web development. I think the things we\u2019re talking about in class are incredibly cool, exciting, and worthy of your time, thought, and energy. Hopefully, when you finish the class, you\u2019ll have developed a really solid working knowledge of the field <em>and<\/em> know where and how to further your own knowledge and expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re going to have a lot of fun, but I also expect you to work hard. Work hard at the assignments, sure, but more than that, work hard at understanding the stuff we\u2019re talking about, why it matters, and what you can do with it\u2014that\u2019s what really matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"class-culture\">Class Culture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-dark-gray-color has-text-color\">While our first lesson will walk through many of the attitudes and practices each of you, individually, will need to cultivate to succeed in this class, it\u2019s also worth taking some time to talk about what we all should expect from each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-dark-gray-color has-text-color\">In short, we\u2019ll work to cultivate an atmosphere of curiosity, fun, and professionalism. That means that you can expect me to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create an atmosphere of curiosity and inclusion where everyone feels welcome to bring their authentic selves to class<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicate a clear direction for the course as a whole and for each class gathering, activity, and assignment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work diligently to make all assignments and activities of this class worthwhile<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-dark-gray-color has-text-color\">Similarly, I expect each of you to approach each component of the class with an open mind, a diligent work ethic, and respect for your peers and instructors. <strong>Final project rough draft due<\/strong><\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>5\/6 Mon.<\/strong><\/td><td><\/td><td>Final Project + Dossier due 10am<\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"policies\">?\u200d\u2642\ufe0f Policies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"attendance-and-participation\">Attendance and participation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As you will with much in life, you&#8217;ll get out of this class what you put into it. You\u2019re expected to attend all class meetings. Life, however, is full, and conflicts, illnesses, and extraordinary opportunities may arise. Therefore, you may miss up to four classes without any direct penalty; I make no distinction between excused<br>and unexcused absences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because missing class affects your ability to be an effective member of our learning community, if you miss more than five classes before the midpoint, you will be dropped from the class. If you accrue more than five absences after the midpoint, your final grade will be reduced by two points for each day of class you miss past the fifth absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students&nbsp;who miss classes or other&nbsp;assignments due to their religious observance will be provided&nbsp;with a fair opportunity to complete their&nbsp;academic responsibilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, students must provide us with notice at the start of the semester of the dates&nbsp;of religious holidays on which they plan to be&nbsp;absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re expected to be present in class both mentally and physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask questions. Take good notes. Don\u2019t screw around on your devices. When you work in pairs or in groups, work eagerly and enthusiastically. In short, be the sort of person you\u2019d want to be in class with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"make-up-work\"><b>Make-up work<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You are expected to complete and turn in your work by the due date, and <strong>late work is accepted only at the discretion of the instructor<\/strong>. If late work is accepted, the <strong>minimum<\/strong> penalty for the first assignment you turn in late is 10% of its total value per day late (ex: 10-point exam turned in two days late will be penalized a minimum of 2 points). After your first late assignment, each subsequent late assignment will be penalized a <strong>minimum<\/strong> of 20% of its total value per day (ex: 10-point exam turned in two days late will be penalized a minimum of 4 points).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"&quot;emaildms\"><strong>Email \/ Direct Messages<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As I\u2019ve already mentioned, we\u2019re using&nbsp;Slack as the&nbsp;sole tool for our class communication. So,&nbsp;<strong>instead of emailing me, direct message&nbsp;me via Slack<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So that I can most quickly help those in need of assistance, take the following steps before messaging me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check the syllabus, eLC, previous Slack conversations, the class site, etc. to see if the answer\u2019s posted there<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spend 5-15 &nbsp;minutes (but not any more time than that)&nbsp;trying to solve the problem on your own (via Google, asking a classmate, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask yourself if the question might be one other students are having, and if so, post it to #slack-overflow on Slack<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do all of those and still have a question just for me, then by all means direct message me! I\u2019ll respond to your questions as quickly as possible, but please allow a reasonable amount of time (generally under 24 hours; 2 business days max) for a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slack allows for communication to be informal and fun, which is great! If there is something I can do to make the class more hospitable, please let me know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"honor-code-and-academic-honesty\">Honor Code and&nbsp;<strong>Academic Honesty<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a University of Georgia Student, you have agreed to abide by the University\u2019s academic honesty policy, \u201cA Culture of Honesty\u201d, and the Student Honor Code (&#8220;I will be academically honest in all of my academic work and will not tolerate academic dishonesty of others.&#8221;). &nbsp;A Culture of Honesty, the University\u2019s policy and procedures for handling cases of suspected dishonesty, can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/honesty.uga.edu\">honesty.uga.edu<\/a>. Lack of knowledge of the academic honesty policy is not a reasonable explanation for a violation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read the entire policy online, but the short story is: don\u2019t cheat\u2014the punishments for violations of the Academic Honesty Policy are severe. You are expected to do your own work and to report individuals who do not do their own work. As nearly all of the class materials and assignments are online, you may find the temptation to cheat (cheating includes unauthorized sharing of class materials, using unauthorized sources during assessments, and more\u2014seriously, read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uga.edu\/honesty\">this<\/a> now to get a full sense of what all constitutes academic dishonesty) even greater than usual. Resist that temptation.
