It assumes no coding experience and uses the desktop app on Mac or Windows. Students leave with a browser-based planner and a record of their decisions.

Use it when it fits your course

The module supports your course’s AI policy; it does not replace it. Assign it when students have the foundation you want them to bring to AI work. In courses that delay AI use, make that timing explicit before sharing the activity.

Before class, confirm that students can install the app and access Codex. Let them know whether ChatGPT Plus is encouraged or required. Claude Pro is separate and is not a substitute for Codex access in this module. Students should not discover a purchase requirement halfway through the exercise.

Learning outcomes

By the end, students should be able to:

Explain how a coding agent works with project files and why its output needs review.

Write a focused brief with context, boundaries, and observable success criteria.

Open and interact with a generated project on their computer.

Report a problem clearly, test a revision, and explain one design or behavior choice.

Document AI’s contribution alongside their own decisions and checks.

Three ways to assign it
<details open>
Independent module / about 100 minutes

Assign Lessons 1–6 in order. Ask students to keep the completion evidence in Lesson 6. Plan for up to two hours, especially when students are installing the app for the first time.
</details><details>
One 75-minute class + preparation

Assign Lessons 1–2 before class (25 minutes). Use 10 minutes for the brief, 25 for the build, 25 for testing and revision, and 15 for a demonstration and reflection. Check access before the class meeting.
</details><details>
Two 50-minute meetings

Meeting one: orientation (10), setup (15), brief (10), and the first 15 minutes of the build. Meeting two: finish the build (10), test and revise (25), and explain the work (15).
</details>
Suggested completion evidence

These are suggested requirements to adapt, not a program-wide grading policy. Ask for the final project file, before/after screenshots, an initial brief and useful follow-up prompt, at least three actual test results, and a 150–250 word reflection. The student-facing checklist is in Lesson 6.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Direction: The student’s brief names an audience, a manageable scope, and a way to check success.

Verification: The test record describes actions and outcomes. It includes retesting after a change, not only Codex’s claim that tests passed.

Judgment: The student can explain why a revision helped and identify a remaining limitation.

Understanding: The student can demonstrate the app and explain one behavior in their own words.

Disclosure: The student clearly identifies Codex’s contribution and credits other sources or assets.

Adapt the activity, keep the process

Web Development: Have students identify the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and make one manual change after the build.

Advanced Web Development: Replace the blank folder with a copy or branch of an existing project. Require inspection first, a focused change, a diff review, and relevant tests.

Native App Development: Keep the browser build as an introduction, or adapt one interaction into a practice SwiftUI screen once students have the necessary Xcode foundation.

New Media Design: Emphasize audience, visual hierarchy, and observing someone use two design variations.

Optional student prompts for those paths appear in Lesson 6. They are outside the core time estimate; avoid assigning all of them as part of a two-hour introduction.

If access or time becomes a problem

Pair students at a working computer and alternate who directs the task and who tests. Have each student write their own reflection and disclose the collaboration. If no working account is available, demonstrate the build and have students critique the brief and test plan; arrange a later hands-on attempt before treating the practical outcomes as complete.

If the build takes longer than expected, prioritize one working interaction and a verified revision. A smaller project with clear evidence is more instructive than a large, unfinished app.

A few discussion starters

Which decision did you make that changed the result most?

When did Codex make an assumption you hadn’t intended?

What did your own testing reveal that the final response didn’t?

What would you need to understand before using this on a client project?

Content and official product references checked September 24, 2026.
