Be aware that you\u2019ll actually be paying $45\/per year for a new domain, unless you want to go with a subdomain of Reclaim Hosting (so, instead of www.yourname.com your site would be www.yourname.reclaim.hosting.com.) Personally, I\u2019d recommend shelling out the extra $15 for your own domain, but the choice is yours!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the next screen, enter your preferred domain name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.48.30-AM-e1535134886618.png\" alt=\"Reclaim Hosting domain name selection page\" class=\"wp-image-431\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: be sure to leave the default Whois Privacy Protection, included free, turned on when you\u2019re registering your domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might want to use a non-UGA email address so that you won\u2019t have to update your account after you graduate.&nbsp;<strong>Also, be sure to take note of your password<\/strong>, as managing it (and all of your other passwords for this course\u2014Dropbox, your lab computer password, etc.) is entirely up to you\u2014NMI faculty don\u2019t have access to any of these accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing checkout, you\u2019ll receive several emails from Reclaim Hosting&nbsp;(if you don\u2019t see any of these messages in your primary inbox, be sure to check your Promotions and\/or Spam folders):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One of the emails will include a verification link.&nbsp;<strong>Be sure to click it to confirm your email address and activate your account.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Within anywhere between a few minutes and a few hours of verifying your email address, you should be able to visit your new domain name in any web browser and see the default Reclaim Hosting landing page.&nbsp;<strong>If you can\u2019t see your site this way, contact your instructor for help.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another will be titled \u201cSet your data use consent preferences.\u201d You don\u2019t have to do anything with this one\u2014it\u2019s basically a chance to opt in to marketing\u2014who wants that?&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"?\u200d\u2642\ufe0f\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/14.0.0\/svg\/1f937-200d-2642-fe0f.svg\"><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another will look like this and includes your&nbsp;cPanel &amp; SFTP Login Credentials:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-12.19.00-PM.png\" alt=\"Reclaim Hosting welcome email with credentials\" class=\"wp-image-445\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need these for our next steps, so keep them handy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ftp\">Download your FTP Account<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After clicking the verification link, head to your cPanel. To get there, head back to ReclaimHosting.com and click \u201cClient Area Login\u201d in the top-right corner, or just&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/portal.reclaimhosting.com\/clientarea.php\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If prompted, enter the email address and password you used when signing up with Reclaim Hosting&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;to get to this screen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.49.33-AM-1.png\" alt=\"Reclaim Hosting Client Area\" class=\"wp-image-435\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This page is where you manage information about your Reclaim Hosting account (like billing details, etc.) and where you access other tools. In the navbar on this page, click the third link labeled \u201ccPanel\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll then arrive at your cPanel, which looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.49.43-AM.png\" alt=\"Reclaim Hosting cPanel\" class=\"wp-image-436\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Click on the icon that looks like a truck labeled \u201cFTP Accounts\u201d to arrive at this page:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.49.59-AM.png\" alt=\"FTP Accounts page\" class=\"wp-image-437\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Scroll down to the section labeled \u201cSpecial FTP Accounts\u201d and click the blue \u201cConfigure FTP Client\u201d link next to the account&nbsp;<strong>without the _logs suffix<\/strong>&nbsp;to see this view:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.50.11-AM.png\" alt=\"Configure FTP Client options\" class=\"wp-image-438\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now\u2019s a good moment to remind you to configure Chrome to download files directly to your desktop&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>. To do so, either click \u201cChrome &gt; Preferences\u201d in the menu bar or hit&nbsp;\u2318 + , to get to this screen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.51.06-AM.png\" alt=\"Chrome preferences screen\" class=\"wp-image-439\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Scroll down to the very bottom and click advanced to reveal more options. Scroll until you see the Downloads section:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.51.10-AM.png\" alt=\"Chrome preferences download section\" class=\"wp-image-440\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>and click the \u201cChange\u201d button in the \u201cLocation\u201d section and select your desktop. Now that that\u2019s done, let\u2019s return here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.50.11-AM.png\" alt=\"Configure FTP Client options\" class=\"wp-image-438\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And click the&nbsp;<strong>gray<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201c<strong>SFTP<\/strong>&nbsp;Configuration File\u201d underneath Cyberduck. This is important so it is worth repeating: you want the&nbsp;<strong>gray \u201cSFTP Configuration File\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;NOT the blue FTP Configuration file. That\u2019ll download a file delightfully suffixed \u201c.duck\u201d to your desktop:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.52.14-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-441\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Double-click that file to launch Cyberduck. If a panel pops up asking if you want to make Cyberduck your default FTP client, select \u201cMake Default.\u201d If you\u2019re prompted to download a new version, close that prompt for now. You\u2019ll then be presented with a prompt that looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.52.32-AM.png\" alt=\"Unknown fingerprint dialog\" class=\"wp-image-442\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Check the box for \u201cAlways\u201d and then click Allow. You\u2019ll then be prompted for your password on a screen that looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.52.36-AM.png\" alt=\"Cyberduck password prompt\" class=\"wp-image-444\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter the cPanel \/ SFTP password you received via email from Reclaim Hosting here (copying and pasting is likely best) and be sure that \u201cAdd to Keychain\u201d is checked before clicking Login. After successfully completing this process, you\u2019ll be taken to this screen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.52.43-AM.png\" alt=\"Cyberduck browser\" class=\"wp-image-446\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Double-click on the \u201cpublic_html\u201d folder and then click on the Bookmark icon (second from the left in the icons in the top left corner underneath \u201cOpen Connection\u201d) to see a screen like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.52.53-AM.png\" alt=\"Cyberduck bookmarks screen\" class=\"wp-image-447\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Click the \u201c+\u201d icon in the bottom-left corner to open another window like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-11.53.18-AM.png\" alt=\"Cyberduck bookmark details screen\" class=\"wp-image-448\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the new window, the only thing you\u2019ll likely want to change is the Nickname\u2014just choose something clear and descriptive, like your URL or your name. Then, close the window where you updated your nickname to be left with a screen like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/newmediaproduction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-24-at-12.40.38-PM.png\" alt=\"Cyberduck bookmarks screen with bookmark added\" class=\"wp-image-452\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, to access your site via FTP, you\u2019ll just need to double-click that bookmark! Be sure to repeat this process on your personal laptop as well so that you can access your server outside of the NMI lab. Pro tip: move the .duck folder saved to the Desktop of your classroom Mac to your&nbsp;<code>webdev<\/code>&nbsp;folder in Dropbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Not your cPanel \/ SFTP information from the email<a href=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/web\/setting-up-a-domain-and-hosting\/#note-1-366\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why? Because 1) Your desktop is super-easy to access 2) It\u2019s visible so you should at least be mildly incentivized to keep it clean unlike\u2026 3) Your downloads folder, which inevitably becomes a hot mess of random files because it\u2019s mostly out of sight<a href=\"https:\/\/nmi.cool\/web\/setting-up-a-domain-and-hosting\/#note-2-366\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We use Reclaim Hosting for domain registration and hosting in this class.
